After coming to the rescue of senior citizens, the UT administration will now set up a commission for the protection of child rights in Chandigarh. The panel or commission will consist of six-member with at least two women. The panel will be responsible for saving children from natural disasters, domestic violence, HIV/AIDS, trafficking, maltreatment, torture and exploitation, pornography and prostitution. It will also recommend appropriate remedial measures.
The panel will also look into the matters relating to children in need of special care and protection. These include kids in distress, at a disadvantage, delinquent juvenile and children without family and those of prisoners.
The panel will work independently. The UT administration already has a child rights helpline. More facilities can be introduced by UT as suggested by the commission for safety and welfare of children. The administration had been discussing the setting up of the panel for a long time. The Commission for Protection of Child Rights Act was notified by the Centre in 2005 and will come into force soon.
