Candidates Turn to Social Networking
August 22, 2013

With the student elections approaching, campaigning has already begun at the Panjab University (PU) with party workers canvassing in open jeeps, displaying banners, rallying around the campus and continuing with the fashion statement of wearing white kurta-pyjama.

Meanwhile, the affiliated colleges in the city surprisingly seem to be more active on social networking websites than on the campus. Though the passion among the contestants, students, and freshers is visible, the 'election fever' is yet to grip colleges as the Deans have not permitted candidates to start class campaigning yet, fearing it would hamper academics for freshers.

With party stickers on their shirts, the candidates and the students supporting them walk around the campus informing students about their party's agendas. As the colleges await permission to start campaigning in classes, the party candidates are using Facebook, Twitter and Whatsapp to reach out to voters. One of the final year B.Com students from Khalsa College Sector 26, Gursimran Singh said that the college parties are maintaining their Facebook pages very well. The competition is for the number of likes each page get.

SOPU President at SD College, Sector 32, Ratan Sidhu said that since there are no restrictions regarding online campaigning, candidates are trying to help students through Facebook, which is the best medium to approach a large number of students. Through Facebook, students are being invited to discuss issues, plan events and conduct seminars.
