Despite strong protest by Panjab University (PU) students, the inauguration of PU helpdesk was carried out successfully on June 26, 2013. The helpdesk of National Students' Union of India (NSUI) was inaugurated by the Union Minister for Transport and Highway Minister Oscar Fernandes.
The students gave the police a tough time. Activists of various parties raised slogans against the minister. The students were agitated over the inauguration by Oscar because they didn’t want any minster to inaugurate a help desk which is a part of the University. President, Students Federation of India (SFI), Prabhpreet Singh said that it is against the rules that the varsity believes in. No outsider is allowed to participate in PU's affairs, but today the campus was full of outsiders.
Turning a deaf ear to students’ woe Oscar associated PU as temple. On the occasion, Oscar also spoke about Uttarakhand disaster. He said that India should act swiftly. During the inauguration of the help desk, founder-member, Jaskaran Singh Brar was also present.
