Govt school teachers protest Against Enhancement of Teaching Hours
The government school teachers on Wednesday continued their protest on the second day against the decision of the UT Education Department of enhancing their teaching hours from 2.00 pm to 2.40 pm and in case of evening classes from 5.00 pm to 5.40 pm. Scores of teachers started their protest at the Masjid Ground, Sector 20, and in front of the office of the District Education Officer (DEO), Sector 19. However, an 11-member delegation of teachers headed by Government Teachers Union (GTU) president Dr Vinod Sharma met the Director Public Instructions (DPI) (Schools) Upkar Singh, DEO Ram Kumar Sharma and Deputy DEO Chanchal Singh.

Dr Vinod Sharma said that DPI (S) Upkar Singh asked the teachers to give the Administration three days' time to look into the issue, but the majority of the teachers denied this and decided to continue with their protest. The teachers have decided to stage the protest on Thursday at the Parade Ground, Sector 17.

The Education Department on April 1 had communicated their decision to extend the timings of the government schools, following which, the Government Teachers Union (GTU) held a meeting and decided to register their protest. The Independent Schools Association (ISA) has called a meeting of the unaided private schools on April 5 to decide about the implementation of EWS quota under the RTE Act. ISA president HJ S Mamik said that they had called the meeting of the schools as the UT Education Department had moved the applications of EWS students to the schools for their admissions.
