Writing Songs on Answer Sheets May Cost One Year
23 May, 2013

Recently, Punjab University (PU) had decided to take strict action against the students who write irrelevant prose on the answer sheets. According to PU’s guidelines, writing songs or prose in the answer sheet means revealing one’s identity to the examiner.

On 22nd May, a meeting by the Unfair means Cases Committee (UMC) committee was held in which five cases of 2012 were discussed. In the five cases, the students were found of using unfair means while attempting the questions. In one case, a student of M.Com of University Institute of Open Learning (USOL) was found guilty of writing songs on the answer sheet rather than answering a question. It is learnt that the candidate had written a Punjabi song in English.
Writing songs in answer books come under clause 25 of chapter II of the PU calendar volume II. The rule states, "If a candidate found guilty of deliberately disclosing his identity or making any distinctive marks in his/her answer-book, shall be debarred from the examination concerned, if he/she is a candidate for an examination held once a year, and for two examinations, if he/she is a candidate for an examination held twice a year."

Of the five cases, one was from the law department, two from Muktsar district and one from Ludhiana. However, this year more than 70 such cases have been reported, so far, from colleges affiliated to PU. The UMC committee will take up these cases, when they are instructed to do so by PU authorities.
